Fiestas in Mallorca (Majorca) Summer 2009
Throughout the island of Mallorca (Majorca) you will find a host of fiestas. From the month of June through to September be prepared for a celebration of some kind every weekend. By law live music must finish at midnight inside or out all over the island. Unless provided by the local council. The evenings can be late, perfectly understandable for a variety of reasons. It is cooler after 11 pm and most local people work until 8 or 9 pm.
Each town and village will have a week of "the arts", usually in July or August. A stage will be erected in the main square (often in front of the main church) and entertainment of various kinds will be on going every day. Everything from folk dancing, classical music to rock and roll will be provided free of charge and mostly of excellent quality.
You can usually find an itinerary in the local banks and government offices.
Pollensa August 2nd - La Patrona
Every year in the village of Pollensa there is a re enactment of the battle between the Moores and the Christians. This is one of the most important Fiestas of the year for this village and is an experience you will never forget.
Fiesta La Patrona in Pollença re-enacts the 1550 midnight battle between local hero Joan Mas and the 1,500 invading Moores led by the Barbary Pirate Dragut Rais. The celebrations start every year with an Alborada (a traditional Pollençan song).
The morning song is followed by a Mass, after which revellers take to the main square to enjoy the dance of Els Cossiers. At 6pm an image of the Virgin Mary travels through the streets in a procession led by folk in traditional period costume from the 1500s.
The real fun starts at 7pm, when the battle against the pirates is re-enacted. Legend has it that Mas led his fellow citizens to victory armed only with sticks. In the re-enactment, villagers dress up in white for the Christians and pirate costumes complete with face paint, armed with cutlasses, swords and sticks. Some eight battles take place over the course of the evening, which reaches its apogee with a victorious fireworks display.
The celebrations continue throughout the week with a programme of concerts and activities, which is released in mid-July.
